Drying oven control using ITG Photometers

One of the most common applications for our moisture sensors is to control drying ovens.  Typically, the product passes through a drying oven on a conveyer belt.  The product being measured can be tobacco, crackers, paper, powder, pharmaceutical products or other product types.  Our sensors are mounted over the moving conveyer belt.  Our sensor shine light down on the moving belt, and measure the returned light at several wavelengths.  With higher moisture concentrations, the sample "absorbs" more light at the wavelength used to measure moisture.  Using feed forward control, our sensor measures the moisture content of the product as it enters the oven.  The oven temperature or resident time is adjusted based on the starting product moisture.  Alternatively, using feed back control, our sensor measures the moisture as the product exits the oven.  The benefits of on-line drying oven control may include improved product consistency, lower energy consumption and higher production throughput.
